U-Pb GEOCHRONOLOGY OF CONTINENTAL RIFTING
Application deadline: January 16, 2017:
Fundamental questions remain unresolved regarding the evolution of the 2000-km-long ca. 1.1 Ga Mid-Continent Rift System, including when, how and why the rift initiated, how rifting proceeded and when and why did it fail. This project seeks to establish ultra-high resolution U-Pb geochronological constraints, using a variety of mineral chronometers, in parallel with geochemical/perological studies, to investigate the timing and nature of each of these problems, and test models for rift evolution and magmatism. The research programme will include a combination of field work in the Lake Superior – Lake Nipigon area involving studies of basaltic flows, sheets/dykes, mafic layered intrusions and felsic volcanics, coupled with state-of-the-art high precision U-Pb dating laboratory methods. Results will be integrated into a well-established record of paleomagnetic studies, their bearing on extension in a drifting Laurentia, Rodinia assembly, and new insights gathered from recent geophysical investigations (e.g. EarthScope USArray).
The research project will be under the co-supervision of Profs. Mike A. Hamilton and Sandra Kamo in collaboration with Prof. Pete Hollings (Lakehead University) and Dr. Wouter Bleeker (Geological Survey of Canada, Ottawa). This studentship is scheduled to begin September, 2017, although fieldwork could begin summer, 2017.
How to apply:
Information regarding the on-line application for admission is available at:

Note that the completed online application and ALL supporting documents (transcripts, letters of recommendation, results of language proficiency tests, etc.) must be received by the deadline of January 16, 2017.
Applicants are encouraged to check the on-line admission application as soon as possible in order to provide lead time before the deadline. Please contact Profs. Mike Hamilton (mahamilton@es.utoronto.ca) or Sandra Kamo (skamo@es.utoronto.ca) for details of the project, and Scott Moore (grad@es.utoronto.ca) for any questions regarding the application procedure.
